Located at the southern end of the campus, Science South is the first of the university’s two new science facilities that will deliver modern, state-of-the-art teaching, research and collaboration spaces.

Science South will be home to more than 50 staff and students from the Department of Agriculture Sciences, which is responsible for teaching and research in the animal sciences.

The Westlab projects team worked closely with Leighs Construction and Lab-works Architecture to craft the ultimate modern and up to date centre for science where more students will come from all over the world to study, especially in the fields of food and fibre.

In May 2022, the project won a Gold Award at the New Zealand Commercial Project Awards in the Education category. The building is home to offices, collaboration areas, social spaces, and of course research facilities and laboratories for the University’s Agriculture & Life Sciences Faculty.

The new laboratory space is bright, transformable and importantly delivers a safe, futureproof, inspirational environment where the students, graduates and researchers can contribute to a globally-competitive agri-tech industry.

Westlab enjoyed supplying and installing the complete laboratory furniture package across approximately 604m2 of lab space – the outcome achieved was a stunning space, focused on growth and efficiency.
