Flinders University HMRB

This 22,000-square-metre, 10-storey facility ambitiously unites cutting-edge medical research and clinical expertise with community, culture, and nature. It has also set global standards in digital excellence, being the first medical institute in the world to receive a Platinum rating from WiredScore for its capabilities.

Westlab worked in close partnership with Architectus and Hansen Yuncken to deliver the full laboratory fit-out, utilising Westlab’s industry-leading Modulab Connect system. The building features Physical Containment Level 2 (PC2) and Biosecurity Containment Level 2 (BC2) laboratories and non-laboratory health and medical research, designed with the versatility to accommodate various workflows, group sizes, and medical research streams.

Inside, there’s space to accommodate more than 600 researchers, clinicians, and support staff collaborating in spaces that can be easily reconfigured to support diverse research projects as science and technology advance.

Service spines

Westlab installed over 250 lineal metres of service spines, totalling 156 service spine bays all up. These include reticulation of 6 different gases, as well as power and data, all suspended from the ceiling. The Westlab service spines are fully manufactured in Australia from extruded aluminium, designed and engineered in-house by Westlab’s experts.

Westlab also adapted the product to create a suspended services bollard which will service automated machinery and futureproof the space to be able to adapt to changing equipment requirements.

Benching

The laboratory features over 900 benches, over 100 sink benches and 360 mobile drawer pedestals. Westlab’s ChemTemp Extreme™ chemical resistant benching was chosen for benchtops, which is a highly durable compact laminate benchtop material that will stand the test of time.

Furthermore, the benching features the newly developed PC2 compliant stainless steel feet which feature a smooth shank with a hidden thread.
