Westlab was engaged by Hutt International Boys’ School, a well-regarded independent secondary school in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, known for its commitment to academic excellence and strong science education programmes. As part of the school’s ongoing investment in its learning facilities, the school identified the need to upgrade its science laboratories to better support modern teaching methods and practical learning.
The school pursued the project to modernise its science facilities and provide students and staff with a more functional and future-ready laboratory environment. With increasing emphasis on STEM education and hands-on experimentation, the existing spaces required upgrading to support contemporary teaching practices while ensuring the facilities met current safety and operational standards.
The project involved the refurbishment of three science classrooms along with a dedicated preparation room, all delivered within the footprint of the existing school building. The scope required a complete transformation of the spaces while maintaining the functionality required for an active school environment. Key project requirements included creating durable and compliant laboratory teaching spaces, improving the layout and usability of the laboratories, and undertaking a full interior upgrade including ceilings, flooring, wall finishes, and supporting infrastructure.
Westlab delivered a complete design and build, end-to-end solution, managing the project from concept through to construction and final installation. The works included the full refurbishment of the three classrooms and preparation room, incorporating new flooring, upgraded ceiling systems, refreshed wall finishes, and the installation of specialist laboratory infrastructure. Westlab also designed, manufactured, and installed laboratory benching, integrated storage, and preparation areas tailored to the school’s teaching requirements, ensuring the spaces were both functional and compliant with modern laboratory standards.
The result is a fully modernised science facility that provides Hutt International Boys’ School with three upgraded laboratories and a dedicated preparation room designed to support practical science education. Delivered on budget and ahead of schedule, the project provides the school with durable, high-quality learning environments that enhance the student experience and will support the school’s science programmes well into the future.
