The University of Tasmania’s new chemistry teaching laboratory is a space of choice at the Sandy Bay campus. Merging flexibility with practicality for this fast-paced teaching space.
The Westlab projects team worked closely with the University of Tasmania in early stages to consider workflows, specific storage requirements and efficiencies for quick lesson change-overs.
The aesthetic of the space takes cue from University if Tasmania’s branding as well as the company values. It is a carefully considered laboratory, which is bright, transformable and importantly connects people.
Key aspects that assisted with the University’s decision to work with Westlab included our core design capabilities, workflow assessment, material suitability and flexibility of the Modulab Connect system.
The outcome achieved was a stunning space, focused on student outcomes. Utilising the proprietary Australian made ‘Modulab Connect’ benching system, that can be further adapted in the future for the changing requirements.
“The challenge for us was to design a replacement for our 1962 teaching laboratory that looked modern and could be constructed and fully functional in a short time period of 6-8 weeks from demolishment to completion.
Upon investigating the market it was decide to go with the Modulab Connect system and Westlab was contacted. After an initial consultation we had a possible design ,that we could work on to develop the final design and at all stages Westlab assisted in ideas to improve the design. Changes were made to the plans without any problem and updates promptly delivered.
The Westlab crew worked with the local contractors seamlessly and on the job changes were handled, professionally and efficiently. (We had a few on site changes due to the nature of the site.) Westlab crew were professional, and responsive to queries and very open to addressing our needs, workmanship was excellent and the Modulab system fitted perfectly for our requirements.
The construction and fit out of the laboratory was efficient and cost effective and the teaching laboratory delivered has met all of our requirements The Laboratory now looks modern and a pleasure to teach and work in, thank you Westlab.”
