From 1 May 2026, Australia will fully enforce updated WaterMark regulations aligned with NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 requirements for lead content and material safety in products used for drinking water systems.
The message is clear:
No other material will be permitted for potable water contact in Australia unless it complies with the new requirements and holds WaterMark approval.

What’s Changing in 2026?
Under the updated regulatory framework:
- Materials previously used (such as CW602N / ADZ brass) are no longer acceptable.
- Products must transition to compliant materials such as CW511.
- Products must be re-tested to AS/NZS 4020:2018.
- Compliance must align with NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 low-lead requirements.
- WaterMark certification must reflect the updated material and testing standards.
There is no transition grace for non-compliant materials after enforcement. Products that do not meet the new requirements cannot be legally supplied into potable water applications in Australia.
Understanding AS/NZS 4020 – Why It Matters
AS/NZS 4020:2018, “Testing of products for use in contact with drinking water,” ensures that materials and finished products:
- Do not leach harmful chemicals
- Do not release heavy metals above regulated limits
- Do not promote microbial growth
- Do not alter taste, odour, colour, or appearance of water
- Do not cause toxic or cytotoxic effects
Testing includes:
- Taste and odour assessment
- Appearance and turbidity analysis
- Microbiological growth testing
- Heavy metal extraction (lead, copper, nickel, etc.)
- Organic chemical leaching
- Cytotoxicity evaluation
This testing forms a critical part of WaterMark certification, regulated by the Australian Building Codes Board.
